The Darker Side An Eclectic Melange edition by Marie Cox Literature Fiction eBooks
This wide-ranging collection includes short stories, haiku, poems, and a play. The darkness of the title seems to refer to the dark side of human nature. In several of the short stories, we see inside the minds of some unfortunate and some downright ugly characters; we read of their dysfunctional families and unsuccessful attempts at relationships. Other stories are more traditional fiction: "Dearc Fearna," my favorite tale, is set in early medieval Ireland. This wide variety of styles sometimes makes for abrupt changes in topic between stories, making it more of a mélange than an anthology. The stories often have elements of both the protagonists' past and present, requiring the reader to consider and sometimes sort out the chronology. The verse offerings of this anthology tend to be less dark than the stories, and I found them enjoyable, overall. The one-act play is again dark, but it, too, is thought-provoking.Product details
